benzene has commonly been used as an industrial intermediate, but its use has a declined in recent years. Why? What is primarily used for? What has it been replaced by in many synthesis reactions?
Solution:
The use of benzene as a solvent has declined in the recent years following its classification as a hazardous compound and carcinogen (ATSDR, 2007a). Almost half of the human exposure to benzene occurs from cigarette smoke; other sources include fuel evaporation from auto service stations, exhaust from automobiles, industrial emissions, and natural processes. Hence, there continues to be a greater potential for human exposure to benzene, particularly in industrialized countries (NTP, 2005c).
Benzene is a primarily used solvent and is present in gasoline, automobile emissions it is also used as in rubber production, chemical plants, oil refineries, and shoe manufacturing.
Heptane is used in laboratories as a non-polar solvent; it can be an effective replacement for benzene. It is commercially available for use in paints and coatings and as a rubber-cement solvent.
