benzene has commonly been used as an industrial intermediate, but its use has a declined in recent years. Why? What is primarily used for? What has it been replaced by in many synthesis reactions?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Solution:

The use of benzene as a solvent has declined in the recent years following its classification as a hazardous compound and carcinogen (ATSDR, 2007a). Almost half of the human exposure to benzene occurs from cigarette smoke; other sources include fuel evaporation from auto service stations, exhaust from automobiles, industrial emissions, and natural processes. Hence, there continues to be a greater potential for human exposure to benzene, particularly in industrialized countries (NTP, 2005c).

Benzene is a primarily used solvent and is present in gasoline, automobile emissions it is also used as in rubber production, chemical plants, oil refineries, and shoe manufacturing.

Heptane is used in laboratories as a non-polar solvent; it can be an effective replacement for benzene. It is commercially available for use in paints and coatings and as a rubber-cement solvent.

An industrial area has several companies that use similar chemicals. Groundwater in this area has been found to be contaminated, and several companies are disputing who is responsible. (The responsible party must pay for remediation.) Two of the chemicals used by several companies are TCE and dioxane, but the companies often use different ratios of these chemicals. One company uses 3.6 times more TCE than dioxane, and the standard deviation of the TCE:dioxane ratio in its supply drums was 0.3....

It has been suggested that occupational exposure to benzene in the petroleum industry increases the risk of developing leukemia. The levels of benzene to which workers in this industry have been exposed were high from 1940 to 1970, but since 1970 have been significantly reduced. What kind of study design, using petroleum workers, would provide the most useful information on whether benzene affects incidence rates of leukemia in this industry? (You may assume that records of individual worker assignments to...
