Write the chemical reactions (substrates à products) for the three steps of glycolysis that have large negative free energy and thus are the irreversible regulatory steps and the steps bypassed in gluconeogenesis.
The three steps which have large negative free energy in the glycolysis reaction are:
1. First step: Phosphorylation of Glucose
2. 3rd step: Phosphorylation of Fructose 6-Phosphate to Fructose
1,6-
Bisphosphate
3. 10th step or last step of glycolysis: Transfer of the
Phosphoryl Group from Phosphoenolpyruvate
to ADP
These three reactions of glycolysis proceed with a large negative free energy change and are bypassed during gluconeogenesis by using three different enzymes such as pyruvate kinase, phosphofructokinase-1 (PFK-1) and hexokinase/glucokinase.
