Expert Solution

Unhelpful group actions can hinder traditional group problem solving. And while starting with a structured, analytical process is important when solving problems, this can lead a group to develop limited and unimaginative ideas. By comparison, brainstorming offers a free and open atmosphere in which everyone is invited to take part. Quirky ideas are welcomed and built on and encouraged by all participants to contribute fully, helping them to develop a rich array of creative solutions.

Brainstorming is used during problem solving, putting into play the varied experience of team members. It increases the wealth of ideas that have been explored, meaning you can often find better solutions to the problems you face.

It can also help you get buy-in from team leaders for the strategy you have selected after all, if they were involved in creating it, they'll definitely be more open to an approach. What's more, it helps team members connect because brainstorming is enjoyable, as they solve problems in a constructive, fulfilling atmosphere. While brainstorming might be effective, approaching it with an open mind and a spirit of non-judgment is important. If you don't do that, people will "claim," the number and quality of ideas will plummet, and morality may suffer.

Group brainstorming has the advantage that it helps everyone feel they have contributed to the solution, and it reminds people that others have creative ideas to offer. It's fun too so it can be nice to build a team! For individuals community brainstorming may be dangerous. Upon first glance, unconventional proposals may seem to lose merit – that's where you need to chair sessions closely, so the community doesn't smash those ideas and stifle creativity.
