CAM

Complementary and Alternative Medicine is a group of medical practices that are considered as a part of Conventional medicine. In the U.S nearly 40% of adults are using CAM therapies.

What a physician should know about CAM?

Physicians are the important personnel for health information and guidance. People also gain information from other sources such as friends and families, internet, media, advertsing, and alternative practitioners. It is the duty of the physician to understand the patient's health condition and helps in potential benefits and avoids harm in the use of CAM therapies.

SLIDE 3:

Complementary medicine used together with the conventional medicine.

Alternative medicine used as a substitute for conventional medicine.

  • Mind-Body relaxation techniques such as meditation, hypnosis, music, dance.
  • Biologically Based therapies including herbal, dietary supplement.
  • Manipulative and body based methods such as massage, Tai chi.
  • Energy therapies including Qi gong, Reiki, Healing and therapeutic Touch.

  • Understand the benefits of CAM therpy and correct form of use.
  • Be aware of the interacts or interfers of CAM with the Conventional medicine.
