INTRODUCTION
Precision medicine is one of the 21st centuary treatment plan. The treatment is based on the identification of genomic changes in the body.
PRECISION MEDICINE
In precision medicine physician understands the patient's own genes and proteins and use this information to diagnose, prevent or treat the illness. In precision medicine tumour with same genetic change will receive the same treartment even the type of tumour is different.
Example
Traditionally chemotherapy , radiation therapy and surgery were considered as the treatment measures for cancer.
With precision medicine for the treatment of cancer doctor's study the genes to uncover the treatment options.Initially with gene sequencing, locate the cancer causing gene and plan for individualised treatment whch avoids multiple line treatments.
CHALLENGES OF PRECISION MEDICINE IN FUTURE
Precision medicine is now in infancy stage and contiuosly growing. Therefore Precision medicine has to face lot of challenges in the future. Some of the challenges are as follows
1. Consent for participation-Participants need to understand the risks and benefits of participating in the reasearch. It requires a detailed informed consent as well as the provision to keep all the health information confidential. In precision medicine patient takes active role.
2.Lack of standardization-Large amount of datas are collected from many hospital and clinics .These data has to be stored properly for the future use.The provision for collection of data and storing of data should be standardized.
3. Financial challenges- Cost is an important issue in precision medicine. The genetic sequencing and development of drugs based on molecular or genetic cahracteristicis also expensive. This increases the health care cost.
4.Technological challenges- Now a days ,Immuno flurosence, molecular imaging, flow cytometry are some of the technologies using in precision medicine. Further more technological advancement is necessary for the success of precision medicine in future .
5. Reimbursement -Reimbursement from the third party like insurance companies for the treatment will become a major issiue in future. All the genetic sequencing test and development of drugs are very expensive and it will be difficult to manage by the patients. This increases the health care cost.
6.Ethical and legal challenges-The main ethical and legal issues can happen on privacy, informed consent. The other issues will be regarding the cost, details with faulty data, and the evidence for clinical introduction.
