4. Suppose that you are the engineer in the charge of the gasification section of the Acme Substitute Natural Gas Company. ASNG Co. runs fixed-bed, dry-ash gasifiers. The raw gas is cleaned, shifted, and sent to a methane synthesis unit. Every morning you receive a report from ASNG’s analytical laboratory on the characteristics of the coal that will be fed to the gasifiers during the next day’s operations. One important characteristic is the ash fusion temperature (AFT), i.e., the temperature at which the ash will begin to melt and form a liquid slag. It is vitally important to keep the bed temperature not only below the AFT, but usually ≥100°C below, to allow for a margin of safety. One day the lab report indicates that the AFT for the coal about to go to the gasifiers is substantially lower than it has been in recent weeks. (a) What instructions will you issue to the plant operators for adjusting the steam/oxygen ratio being fed to the gasifiers? (b) Why? (c) What impact will this change have on the H2/CO ratio in the product gas? (d) Why? (e) How will this change affect operation of the water-gas shift unit? (f) Why?

As an engineer you are responsible to in charge to conduct an experiment for this traffic flow analysis: At 2:00 P.M. a traffic accident closes a road to all traffic. At 2:15 P.M. the road is partially opened with a capacity (car departs) of 1,500 veh/h. Finally, the wreckage is removed, and the road is restored to full capacity (car departs) (3,500 veh/h) at 2:35. From 2:00 to 2:35, car arrives at a constant flow of 2,500 veh/h and then...

You are an engineer in charge of designing a new generation of elevators for a prospective upgrade to the Empire State Building. Before the state legislature votes on funding for the project, they would like you to prepare a report on the benefits of upgrading the elevators. One of the numbers that they have requested is the time it will take the elevator to go from the ground floor to the 102nd floor observatory. They are unlikely to approve the...

As an engineer working for Thomson Pharmaceutical, you are in charge of developing a new cancer drug. The new drug is to be used as a supplement to a well established, currently used drug to reduce tumor sizes in lung cancer patients. Previous studies have shown that the currently-used drug results in an average reduction in tumor mass of 38.7% after 8 weeks of use. To study the effects of the new supplement, you had 16 patients who were given...

You are the Engineer In Charge for a large paving project in New York City. There is some additional paving work being added to the mainline expressway job involving approximately 25,000 metric tons of asphalt. The additional work involves paving nine (9) ramps along the mainline expressway. Due to the Maintenance and Protection of Traffic requirements, the ramps will each be paved on their own night. The total estimated quantity is 400 Metric Tons of Superpave Top Asphalt and 500...
