Is globalization good or bad? Are we experiencing unprecedented cultural exchange, or have we allowed a new form of imperialism to run amok? Read Sherif Hetata's "Dollarization," then read Philip Legrain's article on cultural globalization. After reading both articles answer the following:
How does each man view globalization and why do they fell that way?
How might each man's nationality and background affect their position on globalization?
Globalization brings people and countries together through the international exchange of money, ideas and culture. For investors and economies, globalization provides the opportunity to reduce volatility of output and consumption ,since products and services can be imported or exported with greater ease. Yet globalization is often criticized for taking away jobs from the domestic companies and workers. Another disadvantage of globalization is the increase in wages ,which can hurt corporate profitability. These conflicting viewpoints have created a lots of opinions.
Sherif Hetata's and Philip Legrain's view on globalisation:
Sherif believe that culture helps global economy to reach out and expand over the world . He believes culture is reaching out and becoming global and it develops values such as behavior, vision of happiness and success. He believes media is like the economy where it is one world now a days. He shares his story of giving into the social norms., even though he refused to only few years piror.
Legrain believe globalization can free people from the tyranny of geography and that we are increasingly free to choose our cultural experiences. For example just because someone is born in France does not mean that they need to eat only french food or speak only french, instead can eat sushi, watch hollywood movies etc.But he also believes globalization revitalizes culture and cultural artifacts through foreign influences and technology.
Both believe technology, media ,advertising alter the way we see ourselves. Many of the best things come from culture mixing.
The position of Sherif and Legrain on globalization might get affected by their nationality and backround depending on their personal experiences, or what each man's economy and people experienced from globalization and what are their opinions and thoughts about globalization. Every economy or country has its own experiences of globalization and the same is reflected on how they might think about the globalization.
