Which of the following is NOT a potential benefit of using transgenic plants?

A.

They often increase yields, providing more food per acre and reducing the amount of land needed for agricultural use.

B.

They can reduce the use of harmful chemical pesticides in the United States and thus provide an ecological benefit.

C.

They can generate restriction enzyme sites on a foreign gene of interest to be cloned.

D.

They can allow crops to be grown on land previously unavailable for productive agricultural use.

E.

They can be used to express large quantities of specific biological products more cheaply and quickly than by expression in animal systems.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer:- c)They can generate restriction enzyme sites on a foreign gene of interest to be cloned.

Transgenic crops are genetically modified crops that contain a gene that has been artificially inserted into that plant. The purpose behind it is to make crop more productive, stress tolerance, resistance to certain pest and diseases. They increase yields, providing more food per acre and reducing the amount of land needed for agricultural use. As they are modified as resistance to certain pest and diseases, they reduces the use of harmful pesticides thus provide ecological benefit. As we discuss earlier they can also withstand with certain stresses like drought, salinity, high temperature, high rainfall etc. Hence they can allow crops to be grown on land previously unavailable for productive agricultural use. They can be used to express large quantities of specific biological products more cheaply and quickly than by expression in animal systems. Transgenic plants are easier and quicker to produce than transgenic animals because of several reasons as breeding programme in animal systems is quite difficult ,they have larger life span . Also animal systems are more complex and difficult to handle.
