For this problem, assume salt water and fresh water have the same density.

A large iceberg floats in the ocean. If the iceberg melts, the sea level will:

a) stay the same

b) fall

c) rise <---wrong answer!

Solutions

Expert Solution

If the Iceberg melts the sea level stay the same Option (a) Correct

Explanation:

According to Archimedes principle a floating body will displace an amount of fluid that is equal to its weight.

Ocean is totally with salt water.A iceberg floats in the ocean will displace the salt water an amount equal to its weight.Usually Icebergs are made up of fresh water or non salty water and also the density of Fresh water is less than the Salt water usually. So if a Iceberg made of Fresh water melts its occupy more volume and hence sea level will increase slightly.

But it is given in the problem that the salt water and fresh water have same density.so if iceberg of fresh water melts its volume is equal to volume of salt water since equal density of fresh water and salt water.Hence sea level will be same doesn't change.

weight is same always as per Archimedes principle

usually since

Sea level will increase

But as per given data

Sea level will be same does't change that is stay the same.

A tank originally contains 120 gal of fresh water. Then water containing 1/2 lb of salt per gallon is poured into the tank at a rate of 2 gal/min, and the mixture is allowed to leave at the same rate. After 11 min the process is stopped, and fresh water is poured into the tank at a rate of 2 gal/min, with the mixture again leaving at the same rate. Find the amount of salt Q(11) in the tank at...

A tank initially holds 140 L of salt water with density of 1.05g/cm3. Over a 30-minute period, both hot and cold water enter (Q[hot]: Q[cold]= 3:1) the tank while mixed warm water is drained from one outlet. The discharge rate at the outlet is 25L/min and the volume of the water left in the tank at the end of 30 minutes is 40 L. What is the mass flow rate of cold water entering.
