how to write an introduction containing the oxidation of ethylene with oxygen using O2 and methodology ?
You should start writing in a way the chemical enginner thinks. For carrying out any reaction or process, one require the amount of reactant needed to fed to the reactar and in order to know the amount of reactant ,a chemical engineer always starts from the product i.e. what is so special about your product ,what is its requirement, etc. So the best way to start an Introduction about this reaction is to start from the product itself with its methodology and is their any other side product which can be useful, how the product is varied by varying the reaction conditions and what are its applications.
So you can start in this way:
The oxidation of ethylene can result in the formation of various products in varying range of temperatures from 300-600 degree celsius like aldehydes, formic acid ,carbon dioxide and other polymers of ethylene. This is because ehtylene is an hydrocarbon and with the varying amount of oxygen and temperature we can control the oxidation products and the end product will be Carbon dioxide and water in presence of excess oxygen due to the combustion reaction.
But the so special thing about this reactant is that if the reaction is carried out in the presence of Silver catalyst, the formed product is Ethylene oxide, which is a cyclic compound and this is special because it can undergo various addition reaction with the ring opening and resulting in the formation of several new compounds.Because of its cyclic structure, the bond angle of oxygen is in strained state i.e. it is abnormal which is a cause of instability and thus it undergoes several addition reaction with water and alcohols and form the higher molecular weight alcohols and ether. It is found in many end product applications like it is uded in detergents, thickener and other organic compounds like ethylene gycol, polyglycol ether.
(you can check out its addition reaction on internet but upto this much is sufficient for introduction but do mention about how it is formed through reaction).
(Discuss something about its properties like it is colorless and flammable gas and because of its high reactvity it also toxic to some extent. If you want to elaborate it more just explain the role of catalyst ,on which adsorbtion of oxygen atoms take place and the reaction mechanism follows a complex processes but the end product is ethylene oxide).
