Brain scan methodologies are important to study the anatomical structure of the brain and to find out the causes of certain neurological illnesses. These are also used in clinical diagnoses. The best brain scan technologies are mentioned below:

  1. Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI): It involves the role of magnetic radiation to detect the change in glucose and oxygen level in the brain. It produces three-dimensional real-time moving images of the brain. It provides the best resolution of the brain’s deeper and finer neural structures as compared to any other scan methodologies.
  2. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): This also works on the same principle, but it provides the images of the brain’s structure in the form of photos having less resolution as compared to the fMRI. A low level of glucose or oxygen in a particular area indicates the deactivation of that region.
  3. Computed Tomography (CT) scan: It involves the X-rays passing through the skull to detect any malformation or injury to the brain. It provides the two-dimensional photos of the brain with less resolution as compared to the MRI and fMRI. However, it is cheaper and easily available in most of the places as compared to the MRI technology of brain scans.

The above-mentioned brain scan methods have negligible side effects and provide an accurate measure of the brain structure. Scientists mostly use the fMRI to study the different locations of the brain and the mechanism of activation and deactivation in the brain. The person is laid down to the fMRI machine and provided with the desired stimulus. Then, the activity in the person’s brain is observed in real-time on the screen of the computer.
