If the dean of your faculty asked you to serve on a committee to develop a performance appraisal system for evaluating the faculty, what performance criteria would you identify? Of these criteria, which ones do you think are most likely to determine the faculty members' success at your school? What standards would you recommend to the dean, regardless of the specific evaluation instrument selected?
The performance criteria will truly be decided based on the mission and working criteria of the faculty. Only those criteria which have given a true identity to the faculty with respect to the successful functioning of its members and those factors of faculty members with respect to their quality work that is found appreciable and beneficial by students of the school will be taken into consideration. Among the different criteria selected, some would be measurable while some would non-measurable. Measurable criteria will be taken into consideration and those members who receive the highest score for measurable criteria on a quantity basis will be highlighted. The standards recommended to the dean will be one that would involve evaluating the work of all members for the past year. cooperation of all members of faculty with respect to measuring the criteria and active participation of students from all standards to enable accurate measurement which would help in highlighting both benefits and negatives associated with the working of members in the faculty. Another point would be that measurement of criteria will be strictly confidential and will not be disclosed at any point in time. Those with lowest ones will have to undergo training to improve their talent to ensure better ranking in the future.
