Lean thinking is the idea of waste management in time, energy, resources, commitment and goodwill for customers. This is achieved by removing unnecessary process measures. unnecessary movement.

Some of the tools used in applying lean thinking are:

The 5S’s: Standing for sort, set in order, shine (or keep clean), standardize, and sustain. These define a system for work-station organization.

Visual Controls: Indicators or controls that are placed in plain sight and are understandable by everyone.

Efficient Layout and Standardized Work: Arranging equipment and processes in operational sequence or to minimize movement required.

Pull Production: Upstream suppliers do not produce until signaled by downstream customers. Also known as just-in-time.

Single Minute Exchange of Dies (SMED): Rapid changeover of tooling in machine shops so smaller batches can run on the same equipment with minimum set up time delays.

Total Productive Maintenance: Ensuring that all equipment is operational and available as needed.

Source Inspection: Inspection by process operators to ensure that the product meets specifications before being

Waste is essentially some kind of cost or extra effort the organization has to make to complete the manufacturing cycle. In Lean Manufacturing there are essentially eight forms of waste:

  • Faults: additional effort caused by finishing product rework or failure.
  • Carriage: non-critical resource movement.
  • About production: the produced extra goods for which no market exists. These require control of the inventory and therefore additional costs.
  • Inventory: Management of stock raises production costs.
  • Time to wait: time to wait for two procedures.
  • Motion: people's non-critical motion.
  • Unused resource: Unused resources available.
  • Additional processing: research is completed more than the user wants to do.
