During the Industrial Revolution, which started around 1750, everything changed. People have found an extra energy source with incredible work capacity. The origin was fossil fuels coal, oil, and gas, while coal led the way formed from much earlier geological times underground from the remains of plants and animals. They released energy, originally from the Sun, which had been stored for hundreds of millions of years when these fuels were burned. British colonies in North America produced lots of cotton at the beginning of the 19th century, using machines to spin the thread of cotton on spindles and weave it into cloth on looms. Through adding a steam engine to these machines, they could easily produce India, the world's leading cotton cloth manufacturer until then. One steam engine could power a lot of looms and spindles. This meant people were forced to leave their homes and work in factories together.

Industrialization began in the U.S. when Samuel Slater emigrated to Rhode Island from Britain in 1789 and founded the first textile factory on U.S. soil. He did this out of recollection, leaving Britain with no documents or plans that the British authorities could have seized. From 1810 to 1812, Massachusetts ' Francis Cabot Lowell visited Britain and returned to set up the first power loom and the first mechanical spinning and weaving factory in the States. From the 1830s to the 1870s, railway construction in America boomed.

After 1870, both Russia and Japan were forced into the industrializing world by losing wars to abolish their feudal systems and compete. In Japan, through early industrialization, the monarchy proved flexible enough to survive. The czar and the nobility undertook industrialization in Russia, a deeply rural country, while trying to retain their dominance. Factory workers also served without any legal rights for 13-hour days. Dissatisfaction broke out repeatedly, and in 1917 a revolution eventually brought the Communist Party to power.
