culture medium is composed of different nutrients that are essential for the growth of micro organism.
1. Indicator or Differencial Medium- this media distinguish one microorganism type from another growing on the same medium. An indicator is included in the medium. A particular organism causes change in the indicator. so that particular organism can be differenciated from others.eg. : Blood agar and MacConkey agar
2. Selective Media. These media allows the growth of a particular bacterium by inhibiting the growth of undesired bacteria and allowing growth of desirable bacteria. it contain subsatnces that can be tolerated by desirable bacteria. non desirable bacteria cant survive in it. eg. Lowenstein-Jensen media, tellurite media
3. Basal media are basically simple media that supports most of the common bacteria. it is otherwise called General purpose media. eg. nutrient agar and peptone water.
