(1)
There are similarities and differences between the Photoelectric Effect and Compton Scattering. Complete each of the six partial statements below using the following guide; all you need to provide for an answer is PE, CS, BOTH, or NEITHER.

• PE if the statement only applies to the Photoelectric Effect
• CS if the statement only applies to Compton Scattering
• BOTH if the statement only applies to both the Photoelectric Effect and Compton Scattering
• NEITHER if the statement applies to Neither the Photoelectric Effect or Compton Scattering

Solutions

Expert Solution

(a) BOTH

REASON : Energy is conserved in photoelectric effect because in this process when a radiation is incident on a metal it is converted into the sum of kinetic energy of the electrons released and work function

Energy is conserved in crompton scattering because in this process a photon is incident on an electron and the enery of photon is shared between these two and there is no loss of energy.

(b) CS

REASON ; Just as explained above in cromton scattering intially a photon hits an electron and then both of them move in different directions with respective shared energies . so photons are observed after the effect too.

(c) PE

REASON ; As explained in the first point in photoelectric effect photons are incident on a metal and with sufficient energy electrons are emitted from its surface .

(d) CS

REASON : In cromton scattering effect we measure scattering angle using law of conservation of momentum, where as nothing like that happens in photoelectric effect because it is independent of the angle of incident radiation and we donot usually associate released elctrons with angles.

Compton ScatteringExercise 10:The equation for Compton scattering of a photon off of an electron is.?′=?+(ℎ??)(1―cos?)If using nm for wavelength, the quantity (h/mc) is 0.00242631nm (to a ridiculous number of sig figs, but you can round off later.)
