The most traditional process of water treatment was boiling
water. This is one of the best methods to kill microorganisms and
to purify water. Since it is requires high amount of energy it is
not used for large scale water purification.
The traditional water treatment plant unit consisted of methods
like
- Screening : In this process coarse and fine screens are place
to remove large materials like leaves, bushes, and other larger
materials in water
- Coagulation : Coagulants like alum are added to water for the
particles in water to form flocs so that particles gets settled
quickly
- sedimentation: Water the floc formed are allowed to settle in a
sedimentation tank
- Filteration : In this process water is passed through porous
medium which consists of coarse and fine layers of materials to
remove small particles.
- Disinfection: This process is done to kill pathogenic bacterias
from water
The limitation of this process is that
- This method requires large area for the tratment of water and
the machines required for operation
- It also requires huge initial cost and also maintanance
cost
- It requires large amount of time for the treatment of
water
- Large amount of energy and chemical are required for the
operation of the plant.
- It also requires skilled labours and supervision for the
operation of the plant.
