Limited balance method used mohrs columbe failure criterion to determine the shear strength along the slip surface
A state of limit equilibrium exists when the mobilized shear stress is expressed as a fraction of the shear strength. At failure, the shear strength is fully mobilized along the critical slip surface. The factor of safety (FOS) against slope failure is calculated as the ratio of the available shear strength to the mobilized shear strength. The available shear strength depends on the type of soil and the effective normal stress, whereas the mobilized shear stressd dependson the external forces acting on the soil mass.
Advantages
it typically only requires two strength parameters for any material modelled, the cohesion () and the angle of shearing resistance (). However more complex yield surfaces may be specified.
Limitations.
It shown that for moderately unconstrained problems, the increase in load estimate is minor.
