Pine rockland is an endangered ecosystem found only in South Florida. Invasive plant species threaten pine rockland by out competing the native plants and providing no nutritional value to native wildlife. The largest tract of pine rockland in Everglades National Park is at Long Pine Key. Scientists with the National Park Service are interested in knowing how effective different frequencies of prescribed burns are at removing invasive plant species. They measured the density (individuals/m2) of invasive plant species in an...

Background: You are studying three populations of an endangered species of toad that used to be common in the California central valley. Global warming has caused this species to retreat to higher elevations in recent decades where it stays cooler; the toad used to be found throughout the valley, but is now restricted to the tops of three mountains. Sampling each population reveals that the toad population on each mountaintop is limited to a few hundred individuals, whereas historical records...

Orangutans are an endangered species in their natural environment (the islands of Borneo and Sumatra), so a captive-breeding program has been established by using orangutans currently held in zoos around the world. One component of this program is cytogenetic research. This research has shown that orangutans from the two islands have different forms of chromosome 2. Before this cytogenetic difference became known, some matings were carried out between animals from different islands, and 14 hybrid progeny are now being raised...
