Ans. Ford manages its inventory on the basis of the Just In Time [JIT] inventory control model. The waste reduced through Ford's JIT include those related to the usage of finished inventory and raw materials, as well as related to stocking. JIT approach attempts to reduce costs and improve workflow by carefully scheduling material to arrive where needed at the proper time - consuquently, cost of inventories can be substantially reduced and the use of space can be conserved. JIT production methods were popularized by the excellent result achieved by Japanees industry. When it become evident during the 1970s that the Japanees were gaining markets previously dominated by Americans, there was considerable interest in learning how Japnees industry operates. Then, during the early 1980s. Toyata's highly effective JIT production system had a particular appeal to Americans who were trying to understand Japanees production mrthods. While Taici Ohno, creator of Tayotas production system, credits Henry Ford as the originator, it is now known that Ernest Kanzler, one of Fords subordinates, played a major role in developing JIT production methods. Ford is truly a world-wide operation. There are 158 manufacturing locations world-wide. In every one of these locations, 'some' elements of a JIT program are being implimented - because certainly are not implimenting all of the elements in all locations at once. But working on each of these items somewhere in the Ford company. There are basically four phses to a JIT programe. They are: awareness or understanding, statement of commitment, pilot projects and launch of full implimentation. each phase is explained, as are the potential benifits. At Ford, communication among and contributions from all employee are considered vital, as is commitment from management. Ford Motor Company has an operating philosophy which sets the stage for our ability to be able to launch into a Just In Time progrm. This operating philosophy is to meet customer needs and expectations by establishing and mainting an environment which encourages all employees to pursue continious improvement in quality and productivity of products and services throughout the country, its supply base, and dealer organizarion.
