What are barriers to communication, and how do you remove them?
Here let us first understand what Communication is ?
A Communication involves an information which can be a fact or any information , a sender , a receiver and atleast a communication channel which can be verbal , written or some other medium such as a television and communication is basically exchanging , conveying , passing , transmission , imparting and or divulgence of information by sender to receiver using a channel or a medium. Communication is done for the benefit of the receivers and is most beneficial if it is effective which means receivers are able to make the best use of it and in turn an organization or a city or a state or a country are able to derive maximum benefits as the receivers may be employees of an oranization or citizens of a city or a state or a country. So communication has to be effective . So now we are going to talk about effective communication and what are the barriers which prevents a communication from becoming effective.
1. First barrier could be noise & distraction . This basically is the environment where communication is delivered where common barriers could be too hot or too cold atmosphere or too much noise or presence of flies or inadequacy of light or over abundance of light /sunlight . These environmental barriers can dampen the spirits of both sender and receiver and both could feel uncomfortable if both sender & receiver are live. If only receiver is live and communication is done through a medium such as television than receiver's listening skills can be affected as they will be physically uncomfortable.
2. Second barrier can be culture and language . Today in days of globalization we have employees of different cultures & speaking different languages work at the same place . Here sender has to make sure he or she delivers the communication in simplest & politest of languages so that every body can understand and he has to undertand the culture of all the audiences as in different cultures there are different ways of doing things. Sender cannot be rude and or impolite .
3. Third barrier can be time zone and geography. Here again in days of globalization work force can be well spread out in different time zones and different geographies. Here the efforts have to be made that commincation is done at a time when all can comfortably attend.
4. Fourth barrier can be the personal emotional state of receivers . Senders here have to empathize with receivers and must understand their state of mind before delivering communication to them.
5. Fifth barrier can be lack of sufficient knowledge & communication skills on the part of the sender. Here sender has to make sure he or she is thorough on knowledge part and his or her communication skills are honed to perfection through practise. Here sender has to make sure that his or her emotional turbulence or fear or resentment or anger or hostility are well in control.
