What was the approach taken by the British in regards to African education? How did it differ to the approach taken by the French?
British and France have followed their distinct model in africa with respect to education.
British model:---They were interested in reducing the costs of their colonies and enlisted the help of missionaries to provide education on their behalf at low cost. Missions had been given freedom with respect to running schools, recruited teachers, taught religion, and adjusted teaching contents to local conditions. So the educational system was more decentralised. In primary schools, the medium of instruction was local language followed
France model:---they aimed at assimilation of turning Africans into French people, they thought education was considered necessaroy. Schools could not operate without government permission, they had to employ government certified teachers and follow a government curriculum, and French was the only language of instruction. The 1905 Law on the Separation between the State and the Churches limited the activities of mission schools, and the state became the main and expensive provider of education.
