Some people suggest that a person’s genomic information should
be provided to
insurance companies. How could the genomic information be used? How
could it
be abused? How do you feel about this?
Genomic information represents a persons most private informations about the past, present and future. Keeping this information safe and confidential should be of utmost importance because it is trickier than other types of data. Experts in genomic can determine DNA sequence and perform genetic mapping. Hence the informations found could be held against you if insurer ask for it and it reveals genetic health risks like cancer.
The impact of the use of genetic information for non medical purpose like life insurance etc justify special attention. The issue which could arise need to be very carefully assessed. Being denied insurance or charged higher premium on the basis of genetic traits could have serious consequences and could affect individuals, families or groups who may be already disadvantaged.
The UNESCO states that Any form of decrimination against a person on grounds of his or her genetic heritage is prohibited.
There are also many risks associated with genetic testing, people may feel angry, depressed, anxious or guilty about their results and possibility of genetic descrimination in employment or insurance is also a concern.
