Describe the working and living conditions for Sri Lankans who live in free trade zones.
Sri Lanka is situated near the southern seashore of India. It is a small island country with the population of around 20 million. there are many ethnic groups and culture present. The economy of this country is based mainly on agricultural products like rubber, coffee, tea, coconut etc. It was ruled by Portuguese, Dutch, and Britishers. Sri Lanka got its independence in 1948.
The free economy of Sri Lanka came to the existence in August 1978. It was followed by free trade zone biyagama in 1982 and in 1992 it was announced for entire Sri Lanka to become free trade zone.
There were 14 special free zones that consist of more than 200 garment factories and other factories in 1992. This zone provided employment to more than 200000 people. But infrastructure is not good in these factories.workers of these factories are living in very poor and unprotected condition. In this so-called hostel they have to cook, and other works with limited resources. Due to their poor living condition, they become sick. Private companies and government both are not serious about these issues and not wants to resolve them. The Sri Lankan workers living in free trade zone are facing malnutrition, lack of privacy, poor living conditions, sexual abuse, fatigue, depression, lack of sleep and many other socio-economical problems.
They are working in very low wages as compared to other free trade zones of the world.
