3. Attachment examples?

The formation of a secure attachment to a caretaker is probably the single most important psychosocial task of infancy and early childhood. Studies show that whether a child is securely or insecurely attached to their parent or another caretaker determines their behavior in new situations, and that deprivation of attachment can have lasting deleterious effects.

- Can you share some examples you've seen of healthy attachment?

- How did it happen and what was the result?

- Have you also seen examples of children who were victims of abuse, neglect, or indifference?

- Do you have any examples of how "resilient children" can overcome a rocky start?

4. Styles of parenting?

This question comes in two parts. Myers & Dewall identify three styles of parenting and discuss their effects on the social development of children. Permissive parents make few demands and tend to submit to the wishes of their children. Authoritarian parents dictate rules and expect blind obedience. Authoritative parents set and enforce rules after discussion with their children.

Part 1:

- How would you characterize the style of parenting under which you were raised?

- Was the same style used by both of your parents or guardians?

- How about your parents' or caretaker's upbringing? -

- How would they (or you) characterize the style of parenting used by their parents (your grandparents)?

Part 2:

- Research one culture other than yours in terms of family structure and/or parenting style.

- Locate at least two credible sources(textbook, journal articles, peer-reviewed articles), put the information in your own words, and summarize what you learned about child-rearing.

- Cite your sources at the end.

  • I have seen one of my sister's having a really healthy attachment with her mother. My sister is a working woman and needs to go for work and her son feels a bit sad and expresses it when she leaves. Though the child feels sad, he doesn't go on crying or throwing tantrums but stays calmly. When my sister returns, the child greets her with a warm hug. It completely shows that the child trusts his mother and is hopeful about her return from work.
  • It happened as my sister always took care of the infant's need and made him feel that he is cared for. The cries were attended well and my sister understood well that which cry was for hunger and which one was for toilet. She made him feel cared and also let him express his needs. She never gave him something which was nor right for him and very calmly have made him understand why that thing is not for him. The result is clear and that is the child is developing as an independent child who has a family orientation. He can do by his own at times of need but also cares and trusts his parents.
  • One of my neighbour's son faced indifference from his parents. The parents never caterred to his cries and needs of hunger. They also scolded the infant pretty loudly and never made him feel cared and understood.
  • Though indifference and emotional neglect may affect a child for life but it has been found that a resilient child can overcome these 'rocky starts' and get going. I have heard from one of my friends that she felt neglected and her parents were indifferent of her needs. She was a resilient child and she started understanding and accepting her own emotions and needs. She didn't thought less of herself and started to empathize with even her parents. She told me that she understood that her needs of getting affection was not wrong but not always all needs can be fulfilled and she accepted it. She started self soothing herself and have not let the 'rocky start' of the childhood affect her future.
