Foxconn ethical
issue
Generally speaking, ethical reasoning relating to business has
been characterized by two approaches.
- One approach defines ethical behavior in terms of what is right
and the other approach determines what is ethical in terms of
consequences or outcome of any given action.
- Ethical standards imply that human beings have basic rights. If
we were to add this theory into the Principle of Rights Equation,
we can conclude that the key factor to determine if a business
decision is ethical is to analyze how the decision will affect the
right of others. Corporate Social responsibility is an idea which
states that those who run a corporation can and should act
ethically and be accountable to society for their actions. Let’s
not forget that the code of conduct indicates the company’s
commitment to legal compliance, as well as the responsibility and
accountability for their customers, its employers and its
suppliers.
- Apple, the American Multinational Corporation, better known for
the iPhone and iPad, is embroiled in a worldwide
ethical scandal involving its
biggest suppliers, Foxconn Technologies. Foxconn, worth $60
billion, is China’s leading employer with an estimated 1 million
employees. Foxconn’s Social and Environmental Responsibility (SER)
committee has set up a management system which complies with
international standards, national laws, regulations, and customer
requirements for the company’s development and sustainable
improvement.
