ABC Early Learning Center is a Day Care Center in Waycross, GA. It has a maximum capacity of 103 children. Harry Smith is the owner of the day care center. He recently had an incident with a 21-year-old teacher, Adam Jones. Adam was an education major at Georgia Southern. He had a 3.5 GPA and experience as a camp counselor.   Adam wanted to teach middle school math after graduation. Harry hired Adam to work over the summer. Adam had requested working with children aged 9 – 12, but Harry needed a teacher for the 4 & 5 age group. Adam was disappointed but really needed the job. Adam had studied early childhood development in school and knew how difficult some children could be. For example, he remembered reading that “potentially long-term aggressive behavior can be identified in children as young as age three or four.” His fears were realized within the first week of his employment. Most of his 20 students were great, but four were constantly hitting, throwing things, using profanity, and even biting. Adam was miserable and felt over his head. On June 16, 2019, Adam told Harry that he felt overwhelmed and was worried about the safety of some of the smaller children. Harry responded, “Welcome to the fun world of day care. Be glad that you have a job. If you don’t like it, I hear McDonalds is hiring.” A week later, a parent came to Harry demanding that Adam be fired. The parent said that her five-year-old called Adam a “big scary man.” The mother said she overheard Adam yelling “STOP” at her child for “merely throwing blocks” at another child. To please the mother, Harry fired Adam immediately.

  1. Looking back, could Harry have handled things differently to avoid having to fire Adam? Would any motivation theories help explain Harry’s failure as a manager?

Expert Solution

Answer 1.
Yes harry could have handled things differently. When Adam told him about the the aggressive behavior of for kids. Harry never suggested him the solution of how the situation can be handled. Adam was a newly appointed person and did not have the experience to handle kids. In this types of situation it becomes very important for experienced person like Harry to guide him in the situation. On the contrary Harry told him that he should be glad that he is having a job. Search a type of statement shows that Harry lacked the skill of handling his team. If any of the team member is facing difficulty it is the job of the senior person to guide him for the job, but such was not the case here.
Answer 2.
The motivation theory which would guided Harry in this situation, would have been Herzberg two factor theory. This theory states that there are some factors which are called motivating factors such as job satisfaction and other factors which are are called as hygiene factors which cause dissatisfaction satisfaction in job. Is the hygiene factors such as the working condition and work environment are unsuitable for the employee at the workplace this makes the employee unsatisfied with his job. Such was the case here, Adam wanted to work with the children of age group 9 to 12 but Harry needed a teacher for the age group 4 to 5 ,which created a conflict of interest in both of them. But Adam was in desperate need of job and he has to accept whatever offer he was given. So he was doing the job forcefully out of the need for money but not out of interest.
This theory of motivation would have helped Harry if he had studied that people you like to do job if they have work which are suitable for them and they have interest in it. If Harry had studied the story he would have not hired Adam or rather he would have given him the work which suits him. In this way the entire situation could have been handled.
Answer 3.
Discipline prospective means the study of of a discipline from different perspectives. It provide information on specific field of study written by experts in those disciplines. In this case if Adam would have studied how to handle kids with aggressive behavior, he would surely found a solution for it.
