Two Drosophila flies with wildtype (transparent, long) wings were mated. In the progeny, two new phenotypes appeared

Two Drosophila flies with wildtype (transparent, long) wings were mated. In the progeny, two new phenotypes appeared: dusky wings and clipped wings. The progeny were as follows:
Females: 179 transparent, long
58 transparent, clipped
237
Males: 92 transparent, long
89 dusky, long
28 transparent, clipped
31 dusky, clipped
240
Use the following symbols to answer the questions below:
d for dusky wings, and d+ for wildtype wings (transparent)
c for clipped wings, and c+ for wildtype wings (long).
a) The mode of inheritance of the clipped phenotype is autosomal recessive. Explain how the data shown above support this statement. [2 marks]
b) The mode of inheritance of the dusky phenotype is X-linked recessive. Explain how the data shown above support this statement. [2 marks]
c) Give the genotypes of the parents showing both genes together (symbols defined above). [4 marks]
d) Use a Punnett square to show the genotypes and phenotypes of the different progeny classes (both genes together), comparing predicted ratios with observed ratios. 10 marks

Solutions

Expert Solution

A) Presence of two recessive allele is necessary to express clipped phenotype. Each parent carry one recessive allele. Because to express the recessive phenotype, offspring should get one recessive allele from each parent.

B) Male have one X and one Y chromosome while female have two X chromosome. To express X linked recessive phenotype, female offspring have to get one recessive X chromosome from each parent. But male offspring with one recessive X allele can express the recessive phenotype.

C) d : dusky wings, d+ : wildtype wings (transparent), c : clipped wings, c+ : wildtype wings (long).

clipped phenotype is autosomal recessive

dusky phenotype is X-linked recessive

Male genotype : Xd+ Y/ c+c

Female genotype : Xd+ Xd / c+ c

D)

Xd+ c+ Y c+ Xd+ c Y c
Xd+ c+ Xd+ c+ Xd+ c+ Xd+ c+ Y c+ Xd+ c+ Xd+ c Xd+ c+ Y c
Xd c+ Xd c+ Xd+ c+ Xd c Y c+ Xd c Xd+ c Xd c Y c
Xd+ c Xd+ c Xd+ c+ Xd+ c Y c+ Xd+ c Xd+ c Xd+ c Y c
Xd c Xd c Xd+ c+ Xd c Y c+ Xd c Xd+ c Xd c Y c

1. A geneticist discovers a new mutation in Drosophila melanogaster that causes flies to shake and shake. The geneticist gives this mutation the name of spastic (sps) and concludes that it is due to the presence of an autosomal recessive gene. You want to determine if the spastic gene is linked to a recessive gene for vestigial wings (eg). To do this, it crosses a homozygous fly for the spastic mutation and for vestigial characteristics with a homozygous fly for...

Dihybrid crosses of (virtual) fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) were carried out at the computer lab at this course. The mutant alleles studied were “vestigial wing” (vg) and “ebony body” (eb). The mutant P‐generation flies were homozygous recessive at both studied loci. The wild type alleles were homozygous dominant at both loci. The loci for vestigial wing and ebony body are located at separate chromosomes. Show the Punnett crosses from the P‐generation to the F1‐generation of mutant and wild type flies,...

Small populations of flies that had three genotypes/phenotypes for eye color (red, orange, and white) were observed over several generations under laboratory controlled conditions (all the same for the samples). Over time the diversity in many of the populations changed from flies of three colors to flies of one color, inevitably red or white, but never the heterozygous condition of orange. These observations suggest a. Natural Selection, red or white eyes were more adaptive. b. Sexual Selection, the females were not...

Drosophila melanogaster (fruit flies) are excellent animals to use for studying Mendel’s laws of inheritance. Two Mendelian traits that are often used for these experiments are eye colour (encoded for by the ‘W’ gene) and wing shape (encoded for by the ‘Vg’ gene). The ‘W’ allele is dominant, and gives red eyes, while the ‘w’ allele is recessive and gives white eyes. The ‘Vg’ allele is dominant, and gives normal wings, while the ‘vg’ allele is recessive and gives vestigial...
