Viruses are found in high concentrations in many marine environments. Suggest two roles that virus may play in the microbial ecology of pelagic ocean regions?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Viruses do play a major role in microbial ecology of pelagic ocean region some of the examples of the virus includes Baculoviridae, Herpesviridae, Myoviridae, Phycodnaviridae, Picornaviridae, Podoviridae, Retroviridae,

The major roles two roles incled

  • The term viral “short-circuit” in marine food webs. Viruses divert the flow of carbon and nutrients from secondary consumers (black arrows) by destroying host cells and releasing the contents of these cells into the pool of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the ocean (gray arrows).
  • The second role is that they kill many of the algae blooms. Viruses are the main agents responsible for the rapid destruction of harmful algal blooms, which often kill other marine life. The number of viruses in the oceans decreases further offshore and deeper into the water. This helps in survival of many bacterial organisms

So these are the major two roles that virus play in the microbial ecology of pelagic ocean regions.

Trace metals found in wells affect the taste of drinking water, and high concentrations can pose a health risk. Researchers measured the concentration of zinc (in milligrams/liter) near the top and the bottom of 7 randomly selected wells in a large region. The data are provided in the following table. Construct and interpret a 90% confidence interval for the true mean difference (Bottom – Top) in the zinc concentrations of the wells in this region. well 1 2 3 4...

In many cases, individuals may hold MULTIPLE stakeholder roles at the same time and nonmarket stakeholders may be more powerful than market stakeholders. For example, government regulators also may be Uber customers (e.g. hold multiple ‘roles’). Discuss a stakeholder that would likely support, or oppose, a requirement that Uber extend its insurance to cover the app-on gap. Is it a market or nonmarket stakeholder and is it powerful? Please do not discuss stakeholders others have already mentioned. **others said --The...

A recent study found that toddlers who have a diet high in processed foods may have a slightly lower IQ later in life. The conclusion came from a long-term investigation of 14,000 people whose health was monitored at 3,4,7, and 8 years of age. e) One analysis found that of the 4000 children for which there were complete data, there was a significant difference in IQ between those who had had “processed” (i.e., junk) food and those who followed health-conscious...

A Rutgers University study found that many high school students cheat on tests. The researchers surveyed a random sample of 4500 high school students nationwide; 74% of them said they had cheated at least once. a) Create a 90% confidence interval for the level of cheating among high school students. (Use your calculator to create this interval. Do not do the calculations by hand.) b) Interpret your interval. c) Would a 95% confidence interval be wider or narrower? Explain.

Consider a new virus that causes a life-threatening disease. Two individuals are exposed to high amounts of virus and only one develops disease. Personalized medicine approaches determine that the individual that was “resistant” to the virus carried a mutation in the gene encoding surface protein X. From this information and your knowledge gained in MIBO3500, what is (are) the reasonable hypothesis(es). Question 16 options: A) The “resistant” individual has a stronger immune system than the other individual B) The correlation...
