  • What is LTP?
  • What are some of the presynaptic changes observed?
  • What are some of the postsynaptic changes observed?
  • How do the AMPA and NMDA glutamate receptors contribute to LTP?

Solutions

Expert Solution

LTP mean long term Potentiation. It is the persistent strengthening of a synaptic connection. It may work for a minute or hours .It induce may due to strong tetanic stimulation to synapse. LTP is the primary mechanism of learning and memory.

Some Presynaptic change

  • Increase or decrease in neurotransmitter release occur during presynaptic stage.
  • Change in synaptic strength occur
  • Rapid signal at axon terminal

Some postsynaptic change

  • Modification in receptor or biophysical properties
  • Addition of AMPA channel to the synapse in large group
  • Change in the mode of glutamate release
  • AMPA channel addition to extra synaptic membrane and diffusion equilibrium of extra synaptic membrane with receptor of synapse

AMPA and NMDA are the two receptor that is important in point of view of LTP. The AMPA receptor is paired with an ion channel so that when glutamate binds to this receptor , this channel allow sodium ions to enter the post synaptic neuron.

Hope I fully explain your doubt. Thank You

Discuss the changes that may lead to LTP of synaptic strengthening. Focus on receptors and how they may change at the terminal button. Hint: Both Pre-synaptically and Post-synaptically. Think about how signals may be weak or strong and how they can "Cooperative" or hold "Associativity" or "Specificity". What doe these terms refer to in the neuronal signals and outcome of that activation.

You just discovered, for the first time, that LTP causes learning. Describe the molecular changes involved in LTP. The answer should include: how AMPA and NMDA receptors are different, why this matters, how a particular protein kinase is activated, two important ways this protein kinase contributes to LTP, how a particular transcription factor is activated, how the transcription factor contributes to LTP, how retrograde messengers contribute.
