How do you feel about traditional vs. nontraditional jobs? What do you consider traditional and nontraditional jobs for men and women? Which nontraditional job fits you?
Traditional jobs are conceptualised as those jobs that are typically associated with a specific gender. On the other hand, non-traditional jobs are those wherein men or women make up less than a quarter of the workforce. Traditional jobs for women include preschool and kindergarten teachers, secretaries and administrative assistants, hairdressers and cosmetologists, receptionists and information clerks, vocational nurses and the like. Whereas traditional jobs for men include logging workers, automative body and related workers, bus and truck mechanics, electric installers and repairers, home applicance repairers, etc.
A crossover of men and women from their respective traditional roles into that of the other gender can be considered “non-traditional”. As a woman, none of the “heavy duty” jobs typically linked to men appeal to me. It is perhaps because I have been socialised to develop preferences towards job roles that are commonly linked to my gender.
