Your hospital is considering opening a satellite urgent care center about five miles from your main campus. You have been charged with gathering demographic information that might affect the demand for the center’s services. What data are likely to be relevant? Demand can be defined as the amounts of a good or service that will be purchased at different prices when all other factors are held constant. It is essential for economics and management, in that it helps managers decide what to produce and how much to charge. One powerful determinant on types of services provided and covered depends on insurance coverage. Although there are a multitude of factors that can affect the demand for the center’s service insurance coverage is an important one. If patients have insurance, they are more likely to look for medical care. In particular, demographic information that is important to gather would be the aging population, the growing diversity, and even employment and unemployment rates. It is important to understand such factors. The aging population, according to our previous classes, has been reaching its peak. The baby boomers are now reaching retirement age and what comes with it. As people age diseases and disorders come along. This will affect the likelihood of whether or not the population will be in need for an urgent care. The change in diversity is also important to understand because diseases can be specific. For example, from experience, it is stereotypical to think that those who are Hispanic are more likely to suffer from heart diseases. Knowing whether women or men will be in need for different types of care can help specialize the center even more, with the specific services. Finally, employment rates for the population is important because those who are wealthier or well off will feel like they can afford care without a problem, even if it is just urgent care. While those who are unemployed feel like they are unable to provide health services to their family members and themselves. Everything can affect what will come of the satellite urgent care center. Learning about the population is essential to determining the demand for the services.
