1. You are tasked with creating the ultimate modular home that can allow a person to survive in extreme temperatures.  This house must be able to survive wintering in the Antarctic,  monsoon season in Vietnam, and summering in the Atacama Desert. Due to the inhospitable areas this home model can be located, it must be able to function off-grid.

2. You've been stranded in the Salt Flats of Utah.  As you create your own make-shift shelter, what passive solar elements will you try to implement in your temporary home?

Solutions

Expert Solution

1. ultimate modular house

The basic structure should be like 'princess elisabeth antartica' prototype building- It maintains internal temperatures using only incoming sunlight. The walls have 9 layers of insulation and waterproofed base. It has an integrated heat exchange ventilation system.

Now the extra components needed to be included are

1. It should have electronic air filters and automatic humidifying equipment.

2. The roof should be dome shaped for snow and rain to slide off.

3. A rain water harvesting system with filters and storage tank to be used in summer.

4. An high efficiency reverse cycle air conditioning system and hydronic radiant system for summer season and winter season.

5. The house should be facing sun to collect sunlight during winter. But it causes problems in summer. Use Thermal Window Curtains for that or trombe walls.

6. Solar panels around your house with battery so that it stores energy which can be used in monsoon or winter. The solar panels should have covers so that they are not damaged during monsoon and winter.

7. Another energy source is also needed as a backup. So a compact micro hydroelectric power generator for modular houses.

8. A water filratiion system to clean water and to convert snow to water.

9. Food has to be available locally in atleast monsoon season. So this food has to be dried and stored for other seasons.

10. energy-efficient appliances

11. To function off grid, the house should have an antenna. the staellites should be able to locate the house.

12. Satellite internet and satellite phones can be used.

13. TThe antenna will not be able to work in monsoon season. So ham radio should also be used for emergencies.
