Compliance and risk management is the practice of identifying potential risks in advance and analyzing them to create an action plan which can help avoid or curb the risk or the damage from the potential risk.

Steps to create an effective plan for a public hospital can include:

  • Identifying the population and researching who can be most easily prone to risks.
  • Analyzing trends of disease and infection spread from previous data.
  • Calculating the time of the year when the probability of a risk is very high.
  • Creating an informative measure through which the areas that are under high risk can be informed to take prevention and stay safe from potential disease spread and infections.
  • Reviewing the action plan with the hospital staff and make sure everyone understands their role in case of a potential risk or disease outbreak and make any corrections to the plan if needed.

The areas within close vicinity to the hospital should be classified into three groups based on how much they are at risk of loss of life. These can be divided into Low, Moderate, and High.

Low-risk areas: Based on previous trends, all areas which have rare occurrences of disease and infection spread can be labeled under this category. Potential risks are few but incidents are rare.

Moderate: Multiple occurrences of disease spread have been reported in these areas previously so they need to be labeled under the moderate risk category. Potential risks are occasional and affect a few to several patients, care providers, or the whole facility.

High: These areas pose a serious risk of a disease outbreak that can spread from a patient, visitor, or a care provider to a whole hospital facility or even a community. They need to be kept on high alert at all times and proper surveillance should be done to check for any potential risks.

Once the population analysis is done, A complete list of all medications and equipment that will be required to provide necessary care to all the patients in the wake of an outbreak should be made, and any shortage should be requested and immediately fulfilled. This helps in avoiding any wastage of time which could result in potential loss of life.

Patients receive quality care can be ensured by keeping these few things under control.

  • Proper resource allocation.
  • Ample availability of medication supplies and equipments.
  • Care providers working with dignity and keeping the patient's best interest at heart.
  • Smooth Intrahospital communication to tackle any or all kinds of incidents.
  • Staying humble and polite to patients and respecting their demands and requests.
