About 65 million years ago, an asteroid impact may have caused a mass extinction, which led to thedemise of dinosaurs and created new opportunities for surviving plants and animals, including mammals. Create a short evolutionary scenario for the next human-made or natural mass extinction event.

Human population is increasing dramatically and due to which the demand for natural resources is also increasing. Natural resources are used to the extent that it is not replaced at the high consumption rate. Increased human population need extensive land usage for habitat, industrial activities, dams and for many other purpose and it lead to deforestation. lndustrial activities increases all types of pollution especially air pollution. Carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, methane and other gases are increasing in the atmosphere to cause global warming and climate change. Carbon dioxide is the main green house whose level is increasing drastically and as a result, temperature of Earth is increasing. Melting of glaciers due to high temperature causes increase in sea level and therefore, all the coastal regions of the world are prone to natural disasters like tsunami. Increase in carbon dioxide level also causes ocean acidification and it affects the lives of marine animals and plants. Climate change due to global warming results in extreme droughts and floods to cause mass extinction of animals, plants and human beings.

The Cambrian explosion happened about 542 million years ago. What was the main significance of the twenty million years or so that they call the Cambrian explosion? Experts think that this explosion happened because of an "evolutionary arms race," once some animals evolved protective shells or exoskeletons. Describe what they mean by "evolutionary arms race". For protective shells or exoskeletons to evolve, there must first have been a "new" version of a gene that helped animals make these protective coverings....

Mammals have about 5000 species today, and date to about 200 million years old (though major diversification of mammals happened about 65 million years ago). Compared to beetles, which have 400,000 species they are a small taxon. Compared to dragonflies, which also have about 5000 species but are 400 million years old, they are a young taxon. Are mammals successful in terms of evolution? Why or why not? Defend your answer.
