t - test and chi - square test both are statistical tests which are used to test and reject a null hypothesis. But we can use them appropriately according to data types. while we use t- test then we should deal with two types of data. one of them must be categorical and having two levels while other of them must be quantitative and estimable by mean. But in the case of chi
- square we need to deal with categorical data types with any number of levels. There are the variation of the t - test to cover the paired data. But in the case of variation of the chi- square we can deal with ordinal data and number of variables more than two. Entire large sample theory is based on application of normal tests but normal test cannot be applied if n (sample size) is small . in such a case we need to use t- test.
for further details please study hypothesis test.
from the above difference between two test can predict you which one is fittest for what.
