Why is integration typically viewed as the most successful acculturation strategy? How does stereotype threat come to undermine the performance of negatively stereotyped groups
Assimilation, separation, marginalization and integration are the four types of acculturation strategies in which integration or bi-culturalism is considered to be the most effective strategies of all. Assimilation refers to leaving one’s own cultural identity to become part of the target culture, separation refers to one’s inability to assimilate into the target culture while marginalization refers to one’s inability to identify with one’s own culture and the target culture. Integration or bi-culture refers to one’s ability to hold on to one’s own culture while at the same time adopt the practices of the target culture thus, making people very flexible and feel valued and accepted. Integration is the key to cultural relativism in which people wouldn’t be judgemental but would seek to understand and accept the importance of everyone in the society.
