Which of the following is a high energy compound?

A) Glucose-1-phosphate

B) AMP

C) Phosphoenolpyruvate

D) Fructose-1,6-bisphosphate

Please explain why

Solutions

Expert Solution

Phosphoenolpyruvate has the highest energy among all these. It is also known as PEP.It is the ester which is derived from the enol of pyruvate and phosphate .It exists as an anion which also makes it quite reactive and posses high energy. It has the highest energy bond found about 61.9kj/mol in living organisms. It is also used as an energy source for phosphotransferase system. Moreover , it is an important intermediate between glycolysis and gluconeogenesis which also prooves its very short lifetime and high energy as an intermediate.

On the other hand , glucose 1 phosphate is a stable cyclic structure with one phosohate ion attached to a carbon.

Similarly , AMP is just a stable energy drink popular in Usa.

Also , fructose 1,6 phosphate is a stable cyclic compound .glucose and fructose mixes together to form this.Hence , it must have more stability thats why glucose and fructose converts into fructose 1,6 biphosphate.
