3. Full pod shape (F) is dominant to constricted pod shape (f), yellow pod color (Y) is dominant to green pod color (y), and hairy stems (H) is dominant to hairless (h) in pea plants. The f, y & h genes are linked and reside upon the same chromosome. A pure-breeding green plant with full pods and hairy stems is crossed with a pure-breeding yellow plant with constricted pods and hairless stems. The genotypes of the parents are:

A. YYFFHH and yyffhh B. YYffHH and YYFFHH C. yyFFhh and YYffHH

D. yyFFHH and YYffhh E. YyFfHh and YyFfHh

4. Use the information from the previous question (number 5). What is the chromosomal arrangement of the f, y, & h genes, relative to each other, in the P1 generation?

A. y, f and h are all Trans B. y, f and h are all Cis C. y and f are Cis

D. y and h are Cis E. f and h are Cis

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer 3.

Parent 1 is green plants with full pods and hairy stems. Parent is pure breeding that means genotypes will be yy for green, FF for full length pod and HH for hairy stem. Means parent 1 genotype is yyFFHH.

Parent 2 is yellow plant with constricted pods and hairless stems. Genotype would be YY for yellow color, ff for constricted pod and hh for hairless stem. Thus, overall it becomes YYffhh.

Thus, option d is the answer.

Answer 4. Parents are yyFFHH and YYffhh.

Cis means arrangement of YFH on one homologue and YFH on another homologue. Means when dominant genes are present together on one homologue and recessive genes on the other.

Trans means YfH on one homologue and yFh on another. Or it could be yFH on one and Yfh on another. Means when dominant and recessive are mixed on a homologue chromosome.

Option e is the most promising. Because f and h are present together in the parents.

Gene sequence seems Y-F-H or y-f-h.

Pod characteristics are effected by a number if genes. Pod color (green dominant to yellow), pod surface (rough is recessive to smooth), and pod width (wide is dominant to narrow). Pod color and pod surface are 10 map units away. True breeding plants with green, wide, and smooth were mated with yellow, narrow, and rough. This plant was test crossed. In peas, yellow seed pod (Y) is dominant to green seed pod (y), and inflated seed pod (N) is dominant to constricted seed pod (n). These two loci are NOT linked.
