The Ottoman empire was once among the biggest military and economic powers in the world. But prosperity of the Ottoman empire didn't last . Ottoman empire failed to modernize itself despite significant efforts , the state lagged behind its rivals in terms of technology and financial structure due to the following reasons.
* The industrial revolution began in 18th century in England. It soon spread to other parts of Europe. Industrialization transformed the economies that has been based on agriculture and handicrafts into economies dominated by industry and machine technology. Technological changes like use of new basic materials and energy resources were part of the industrial revolution.
>But even after the introduction of industrialisation, Ottoman economy remained agricultural.
> New methods of production were not adopted and large mills and factories were absent .
> Exploration for metals didn't even take place.
> Natural resources were underdeveloped.
* Education attainment level of the population was poor. Skill development was also low. In short, quality of the labourers was not up to the mark. other European countries excelled in these field.
* Therefore, Ottoman empire lacked skilled labourers who could master the use of technology
*. Poor leadership never realized the importance of technology and development of financial structure. The administration was corrupt and nepotism took hold of administration at all the levels.
* inflation severely damaged the economy . Undertaking of financial reforms almost became impossible.
As a result, Ottoman state, which was once self sufficient had to face its ruin.
