New Hollywood (late-1960s - early 1980s) refers to a movement in the U.S film history when a new generation of youthful filmmakers rose to prominence . They impacted film production & marketing, & the manner in which major studios handled film-making. The director, instead of the studio, took on the main authorial role.

The movies were stylistically characterised because their plot usually strongly differed from classical norms. After the end of the studio system & the rise of TV, the commercial success of movies declined. Successful movies of the early New Hollywood period include Night of the Living Dead & Easy Rider whilst movies which flopped at the box office include One from the Heart & Heaven's Gate marked the culmination of this era.

In classical Hollywood movies the plot emerged rather organically as a function of the desires, drives, motivations, & aims of the central characters. However, from the mid-1970s , characters became storyline functions.

During the peak of the studio system, movies were made entirely on a set in isolated studios. The content was limited by the Motion Picture Production protocol, & although golden-age movie-makers found loopholes in its regulations, the discussion of taboo content thru film was effectually prevented. The shift to a ‘new realism’ became doable when the Motion Picture Association of U.S film rating system was introduced & locale shooting became more viable.

Due to the breakthroughs in movie technology (for instance, the Panavision Panaflex cameras), the New Hollywood movie-makers could shoot thirty-five mm camera film in exteriors with comparative ease.

As location shooting was inexpensive film-makers swiftly developed the taste for locale shooting, resulting in a more naturalistic approach to movie-making, specially when compared to the mostly stylized manner of classical Hollywood spectacles/ musicals made to compete with TV during the 1950s & the early 1960s.

However, in editing the New Hollywood movie-makers stuck to realism more freely than their classical Hollywood predecessors.

The end of the production protocol enabled New Hollywood movies to include anti-establishment political subjects & the utilization of rock music.
