The topic I would be arguing in favor of is- ‘Increasing American partnerships across the world’. The target audience is any politically inclined person.
As we look around the world of today, we find an increasingly uncertain era and a socio-political quagmire that is only increasingly dividing us- making us suspicious and scared. An oft-heard word these days is- ‘isolationism’. It is important for all countries, but it becomes even more important in case of USA. For decades, US has been the premier power in the world. It has policed the world, many a times creating disasters and many a times averting disasters. But the times have changed. Its not 90s with pax Americana reigning and the world mostly a peaceful place. As extremism rises across many parts of the world, as other countries look to challenge USA and its political system and as all country increasingly looking inwards- there are many voices in American that want us to also look inwards- isolate ourselves.
I would argue that this is precisely what we should not do. Yes, USA has made mistakes, has gotten itself involved in businesses it had no right to be in- but it has been a stabilizing force too. If we look inwards and disengage ourselves from a lot of the world- we will be leaving behind many allies- some joined by cultural values, some by political values and some by simple geostrategic compulsions. Not only will they feel betrayed by an isolationist USA, they inevitably will face choice of either going it alone or finding some other partners. Going at it alone will be harmful for everyone, at least economically, in this globalized world. Even more so, the alternatives are totalitarian regimes that would more than glad to see America leave its place as leader of the free world and will happily take over- for worse results for everyone. Then we will be forced to get involved with far fewer friends and resources. Then why become isolationist in the first place?
