Direct democracy is a feature of the California government that does not exist at the national
level. Define direct democracy. Identify the elements of the California Constitution that empower
the people in this way. After watching the videos on direct democracy, do you think it is an
advantage or disadvantage?
Introduction- Direct democracy or pure democracy is a form of administration in which all laws and policies imposed by governments are determined by the people themselves, rather than by representative who is elected by the people.
Advantages- The pure democracy connects people to the government directly, people can assess the performance of governmental institution and authorities.
Disadvantages- The direct democracy involves a large number of people in lawmaking and implementation so that it could be a difficult task for the government to combine different demands. Some people think there are too many initiatives in California today, to make a good decision, voters need to learn about every issue while it is not practically possible.
Direct democracy in California- The system of direct democracy started in the 1900s when people of California were unhappy with their representative. In 1911, citizens of California changed the state constitution and proposed a direct democratic system. The direct democracy empowers individual and enables them in the lawmaking process.
