Internet field work is research into the social, cultural, political, economic, ethical, technical and aesthetic aspects of the Internet that involves observation of ongoing online events or accumulating qualitative or quantitative data from the online environments (e.g. email, web pages, discussion groups, virtual communities and/or archives) on the Internet for examination and analysis. Somehow it has some difficulties in handling it. Discuss FIVE (5) difficulties in Internet field work.
Following are the FIVE (5) difficulties in Internet field work:
(1) Security: Security is a crucial issue on the Internet, and it is probably the most significant challenge for the Internet field work. When you increase the number of connected devices, the number of opportunities to exploit vulnerabilities through poorly designed devices can expose user’s data to theft, especially when the data streams are left with inadequate protection.
(2) Privacy: The Internet field work presents some unique challenges when it comes to privacy, and a lot of that goes far beyond the data privacy issues that exist currently. Much of this is because of the trouble integrating devices into the environments without people using them consciously.
(3) Standard: The data gathered through Internet field work lacks standardization. This impacts the analysis of social, cultural, political, economic, or ethical aspects based on these data.
(4) Accuracy: Sometimes, a lot of gathered data through internet is not accurate due to inconsistent, irrelevant or unauthentic sources.
(5) Regulation: Legal issues related to the Internet field are concerned with potential violations of civil rights because of law-enforcement surveillance. Other issues that must be considered are cross-border data flow, legal liability when it comes to unintended use, privacy lapses and security breaches.
