The major use of this particular test is to ascertain whether the samples are coming from populations that have equal medians. We generally make use of the test when the dependent variable is measured at the ordinal level or when the assumptions of normality are not being met. The conditions of this particular test include the assumption that the sample have been selected independently and the populations from which samples are taken have the same general shape.
