EU - Turkey relationship
EU Turkey relationship started in 1959 and agreement named Ankara was formalised in 1963.Turkey is one of the key partner of EU in middle East.They share same land border via states of EU -Greece and Bulgaria.
Key factors
1) They signed agreement of association in 1963.
2) Turkey presents petition for complete membership in 1987.
3) In 1993 ,they started customs union negotiation and it came into effect in 1996.
4) In 1999, Turkey was given the ranked in European members as a candidate country at Helsinki summit.
5) In 2004, EU make a decision to began accession negotiation.
6) In 2016, parliament of EU stand up to put off accession negotiation which it made with Turkey over regulations of law and rights of humans.
Turkey and EU issues
1) When in 2016 , accession negotiation between EU and Turkey hindered. At that time, Turkey was condemned by EU for violations of human rights and problems in rule of law.
2) In 2017, EU officer conveyed that planned policies of Turkey break the eligibility criteria of Copenhagen for European membership.
3) On 26 June 2018, General affairs council of EU said that Turkey is moving away form EU.
4) Differences in culture of Turkey with majority of Muslims and EU with Christians play a main role in whole debate regarding accession of Turkey to EU
