The researchers examined the mean age of the patients who were depressed and those who were not. Write an appropriate null and alternative hypothesis. What would be a good statistical test for this analysis and why? The corresponding p value is 0.25? What do you conclude?

Solutions

Expert Solution

The null hypothesis would be :

The mean age of patients who are depressed is same as the mean age of the patients who are not depressed

i.e.

The alternative hypothesis would be

The The mean age of patients who are depressed is different from the mean age of the patients who are not depressed.

i.e.

A good statistical test for this analysis would be:

T test for two independent samples.

Since the population standard deviation is unknown and for a large enough sample the assumption of normality shall hold, this is a good test for the required analysis.

The corresponding p value is 0.25. We would conclude that since p-value > level of significance(all the common level of significance - 1%,5%,10%), therefore we would not reject the null hypothesis and conclude that there is no significant difference between the mean age of people who are depressed and mean age of people who are not. In other words, we would accept the null hypothesis.

Depressed patients were randomly assigned to one of three groups: a placebo group, a group that received a moderate dose of the drug, and a group that received a high dose of the drug. We are now also interested if a patient's weight has an effect on the drug's effectiveness. Patients were categorized as either underweight, overweight, or 'medium...

Researchers examined the reproductive characteristics of the eastern cottonmouth (a type of snake). They were able to record the number of baby snakes per litter for 24 female cottonmouths in Florida and 44 female cottonmouths in Virginia. The mean number of young per litter for the sample of cotton- mouths in Florida is 5.46 with a standard deviation of 1.59, and the mean number of young per litter for sample of Virginia cottonmouths is 7.59 with standard deviation 2.68. Health workers who regularly care for patients who have conditions that may cause those patients to be aggressive, violent or dangerous are given training on how to avoid and handle these situations. Your boss has asked you to create a key points handout about this approach that you could use as part of a training session. Write it.

Neuroscience researchers examined the impact of environment on rat development. Rats were randomly assigned to be raised in one of the four following test conditions: Impoverished (wire mesh cage - housed alone), standard (cage with other rats), enriched (cage with other rats and toys), super enriched (cage with rats and toys changes on a periodic basis). After two months, the rats were tested on a variety of learning measures (including the number of trials to learn a maze to a...

Human Resource Management researchers examined the impact of environment on employee development. Employees were randomly assigned one of the following four workplace types/conditions: Impoverished (isolated cubicles each with bare minimum equipment - chair, desk & computer), standard (cubicles placed hear each other, equipped with a 'normal level' of office equipment - printer, shelves, manuals, stationery, etc.), enriched (standard cubicles plus regular work-related meetings), super enriched (enriched environment plus regular non-work-related social events). Employees were also categorized by function they performed...
