We have all heard the saying, "You have one chance to make a good first impression". If we were going to analyze this in social psychology terms, what would we say? What is the source of most of your knowledge about impression management?

  • In social psychology terms, creating an impression on someone, whom you meet for the first time,is all about presenting yourself in a way which creates an impact on the person.Presenting oneself in a new and interesting light but remaining true to oneself is very important in order to create a good impression on someone.
  • For example, when you go for an interview, you need the job so you try to create a lasting good impression on the interviewer,so that you get the job, eventhough the job is paying less. You might show excitement for the job and joining the company, you might mention to the interviewer how it was your dream to work in their company, and just be honest about the questions being asked. All these are tactics to create an impact on the interviewer,so that they remember you and offer you the job.The power to present yourself is in your hands,i,e,whether you want to create a good lasting impression or a bad one.
  • Impression management is an important concept in social psychology which means an active self presentation of oneself to enhance one's image in the eyes of others.Every individual has a different source for impression management.
  • My source and understanding of making impressions comes from myself,i.e. how I perceive myself.Because the way you perceive yourself, will influence how others see you.If you present yourself to others in a positive light and take that extra effort in it,then only you would be able to create a good long lasting impression on others, otherwise people wouldnt bother at all.
  • If I want people to like me and consider me for the job, then I would make that extra effort without compromising on my true self,to promote myself and form an impression. And this understanding comes with time, the more time you spend on yourself and understanding the person you are,the more ways you would learn to create long lasting impressions on others.
  • When you go and meet someone for the first time, they know nothing about you and the best way to form an instant impression about you is observing how you dress and talk. The first cue is always the physical looks,so working on that is important.I learnt this, and started to work on myself,by dressing up appropriately for my meetings with another person, whether it was for an interview or a date. And this understanding, definitely increased my knowlegde about how important it is to create impressions on people,to enhance your own self image.
