Expert Solution

In experimental molecular biology, which allow monitoring of gene expression of tens of thousands of gene expression for tens of thousands of parallel and are already producing huge amounts of valuable data. Analysing and handling of such data is becoming one of the major bottlenecks in the utilization of the technology. Gene expression measurement is usually achieved by quantifying levels of the gene product, which is often a protein. Two common techniques used for protein quantification include Western blotting and ELISA.

The ability to monitor the gene expression at the transcript level has become possible due to the advent of DNA microarray technologies. By measuring transcription level of genes in an organism under various conditions, at different developmental stages and in different tissues , we can build up gene expression profiles which characterizes the dynamic functioning of each gene in the genome. The raw data produced by microarrays are infact monochrome images.

In any physical experiment it is important to know not only the value of the measurement, but also the standard error or some other indicator of reliability for each data point. Several data analysis algorithms exist for the analysis of gene expression data resulting from cDNA microarray experiments. The first algorithms has been used in three genes expression data sets. The results found in general are at least in excellent agreement with studies in the open literature establishes the viability and strength of the algorithms for gene expression data analysis.
