: In mechanics, this quantity represents the total area under the stress–strain diagram, and therefore it indicates the maximum amount of strain energy per unit volume the material can absorb just before it fractures. Certainly this becomes important when designing members that may be accidentally overloaded. Which type of modulus is it? Describe it.
This modulus is Modulus of toughness . It is the amount of strain energy absorbed by a material just before it fractures per unit volume of the material.
As this is the strain energy absorb up to fracture point. So, from the drawn stress - strain diagram we can conclude that it is the maximum amount of strain energy stored per unit volume of the material. Hence, it become important from design point of view for the material which is under impact or suddenly applied loading condition. As toughness is the property of material to resist against impact load (i.e fracture).
